Guess These Cultural References
H.E. and I shopped at Target today for some household items. As we went down the aisle of trash cans and laundry baskets, we pointed out the various styles…
April: Oh, look! I love how they make them curve now, to accomodate the shape of a person’s hip. [Demonstrates by holding a basket at her side, edge on her hip.]
H.E.: Do you need a laundry basket?
April: Nah. I have at least two of them at home. [Notices another style of laundry basket—one made of wicker and lined inside with a light flowery patterned cloth.]
H.E.: [Notices the same basket.] How about a basket to put baby Moses in and push into the river among the reeds?
April: [Laughs.] No thanks.
After making our purchases and leaving Target, H.E. drove us out of the parking lot, and as we waited for the light to change, I stared at the Burger King across the street and made nonsensical sounds…
April: [Voice grates.] REG-RUB! REG-RUB!
H.E.: Reg rub? What’s reg rub?
April: It’s what’s in the mirror, written backwards, in red ketchup. What else?
H.E.: [Laughs and shakes his head.] That’s cute.
Okay. Now guess those cultural references. Should be pretty easy.

Other than the Biblical reference to Moses I’m not sure about # 2.
But the second one: from the movie The Shining, when the boy keeps saying “RED RUM” in this *freaky* voice, and writes it on the wall. When his mom sees the reflection in the mirror, it spells MURDER. I generally don’t get creeped out, but I will *not* watch that movie alone, ever.
Oh wait…. on the first reference “curved to fit better”. Would I have seen this product advertised on daytime TV?
You got both on the nose, JJ. There wasn’t anything else … just extra bit of dialogue so that it wouldn’t throw the talk of laundry baskets out of context. 🙂
I’ve been to the Overlook Hotel! I have the magnet. I’m just sayin’.
