Too Much of a Good Deal

Too Much of a Good Deal

I’ve subscribed to a stock photo site for a month. It’s one of those sites that have only subscription packages available; they don’t use credits. It’s fairly expensive, so I went for the shortest, cheapest package they had. I figured that at a maximum 25 downloads a day, it was not a bad deal, so long as I downloaded those 25 everyday. That’s 750 images for the month, at less than $4 each.

Well, it’s a lot harder than I thought to download that many stock photos a day on a consistent basis.

They count on you to get tired of doing it after a while, which means you skip an image or a day, and pretty soon the deal isn’t as good as you thought it was. Even if you’re diligent, there might not be that many photos you want from the site, and there you are stuck with photos you might never, ever use.

It’s like subscribing to the Columbia House CD of the Month Club.

After Columbia House sent me the fifth or tenth CD by an artist I didn’t even recognize, I bellowed, “Never again!”

Likewise, that’s the last time I subscribe to that stock photo site.

  1. LOL! I’ve been caught with these too. I start off downloading the 25 but by day 3 I’m kinda over it LOL!. It’s time consuming and I guess they rely on the fact that people will be too lazy to get their money’s worth.

There was a stock site that had I think 5 or 10 downloads a day. That was much more manageable.

  2. Has anybody seen April? She went downstairs last month to download some pics and never came back…

  3. Lyn, I knew it would be a pain, but I went ahead with the subscription because they had an image I needed that I couldn’t find anywhere else. Still, I have completely underestimated the pain it is.

As H.E. has illustrated … it’s like getting lost in the Bermuda Triangle. It has swallowed up my life!

  4. I hit the “dollar bin” at a stock photo site yesterday and went through my 15 credits in a heartbeat.

I am a stock photo junkie, but I don’t think I could do 25 a day for a month. Wow. What else would you be doing with your time? Nothing!

  5. I did the dollar bin downloads for a time when I first started out, but I have yet to use a photo from that. Same goes for the free photos given out every week. Seems you get what you pay for, so I stopped doing it. I was stuffing my hard drive with photos I couldn’t use!
