Latest Work, 2008 Week 9

There are not as many covers as I had hoped there would be. Because of my month-long subscription from hell, I wanted to do as many covers as I could so that the majority of the images I downloaded would be immediately useful, but I haven’t gotten many new assignments, and the ones that I do have require something a little more different than the usual fare.

What I should have done was subscribe earlier, back when I was whipping these out by the ton.

The illustration for Finding Mr. Right Is Murder is another one of my cartoons, a larger version of which is at the bottom of this post.

The following print covers were a collaboration between me and Anne Cain. She did the illustrations, and I did the design or layout. My favorite is the first one, Taken.

I think we make a great team.

And yes, the back of that poor woman’s skirt is stuck in the butt of her pantyhose.

The Assignment

This was approved just after I posted, and since it rightfully belongs with the two print covers above, I figure I’d add it in now instead of waiting until next time with the next batch. I didn’t do the original e-book version of this cover as many people seem to think, and the artist was no longer with the publisher, so when the book went to print, it got a whole new makeover. Except for the art direction of “something similar,” it’s all me and a couple of stock photos.

  1. Ooh yes, I’m liking The Assignment 😀 Also, Within Reach looks gorgeous. I’m yet to work out the layered blending. It looks fantastic!

  2. Lyn, do you use Photoshop? The layered blending is pretty easy once you’ve played with all the options and opacities and seen what the different settings can do. Also, the extensive use of layer alpha masks (that’s an alpha mask that is tied to the layer itself and not placed in the Alpha Channels palette) helps you to control the amount of blending in certain areas. I use layer alpha masks a lot in my work.

  3. Crews Continue Search for Missing So Cal Artist

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (AP) — Firefighters and police continue to search for a Huntington Beach woman who was buried in an avalanche of internet downloads as she attempted to grab all the images she could possibly get in a limited amount of time.

Deputy Chief Dexter Mann of the Huntington Beach Fire Department told reporters that graphic designer April Martinez, 34, was last seen three weeks ago just after she purchased an expensive limited subscription to an online photo site. The site requires that photos be downloaded every single day for a month.

Martinez, the long-time companion of a famous but tragically silly Hollywood screenwriter whose name authorities could not remember, was reportedly trying to ‘score the limit’ on downloads when she was overcome by over three tons of high resolution images at once.

Chief Mann refused to confirm if simple greed was a factor in the incident. Ms. Martinez, who is the human pet of a black cat without a name, is a highly regarded book cover artist specializing in buff guys who can not afford shirts, and weird women who date wolves and whales.

  4. LMAO! H.E. you are priceless!!! My husband thinks I’ve gone nuts, sitting here giggling away 😀 Thanks for the laugh!!

April, holy cow I have some learning to do. I’m not quite sure what alpha masks are. Do you know of a link to a tutorial I could check out? Then again, it’s possible that I may have done it before but I just don’t know all the designer jargon yet LOL! Oh,and yes I do use photoshop CS2. I’m hoping to save up for CS3 one day soon 😉

  5. Silly H.E., you and your wasted youth in the news, don’t start any rumors! 🙂

Lyn, I think I touched on layer alpha masks for a little bit in this tutorial:

If you use gradients in the mask instead of painting in strict black or white, you can create a really nice fade, like I’ve done with the hero on the Within Reach cover — I have the mask on that layer fading from white to black from his nose to his chest. That’s why you can see his chin and little bit of his neck before he disappears entirely.
