I don’t have many photos of my cat. She’s black, and she never stays still for the camera, so she’s hard to shoot. If I shoot her with the flash, she looks awful. If I shoot her in natural light, either the background looks great, and she’s a black blob; or she looks great, and the background is all blown out. If the natural lighting is great all around, cat and background, then she’s moving around and causing a motion blur.<\/p>\n

Trust me. Try shooting a black cat. It’s a pain in the butt to shoot.<\/p>\n

But she actually stayed still one day, and I shot her in natural lighting, no flash. It was a challenge keeping the camera still for the slightly long exposure, but I really wanted to capture the rich coloring and texture of her not-quite-completely black fur. Her hair is a lot like mine—long, thick, dark, and (under the light) with chocolate or reddish tones. And like me, she sheds a lot and doesn’t like posing for pictures.<\/p>\n

Just as a comparison, here’s the first shot I ever took of the cat<\/a>, possibly the first shot I ever took since taking up photography. I believe I get the award for Most Improved.<\/p>\nShare this post:
